In Dec. 1981
It was beginning of Neurosurgery at Nagpur by Dr. Shyam Babhulkar with inspiration from Late Dr. G.M. Taori (who started First Neurology Clinic in 1973 at Ramdaspeth Nagpur) & Prof. S.S. Babhulkar. It was 1st in whole Vidharba & central Maharashtra (No CT/ NO MRI ERA)

In March 1983
With Dr. G.M. Taori’s tireless efforts & follow-up, Gopikrishna Taori Trust’s Central India Institute of Medical Sciences (CIIMS) Bhoomi Pujan was done with the auspicious hands of Bhante Susai & Immi. Construction was started.
-
In June 1985
ONLY OPD started at one of the halls and rooms at the present site of CIIMS while keeping construction in full swing. The consultants were attending consulting chambers for neuro and cardiac patients.
-
In Aug 1986
Weekly clinical meetings were started on each Thursday at 04:00 PM in the hall of OPD Complex for neuroscientists, general physicians, and many outside physicians who used to bring their neuro cases for discussion.
-
In March 1987
Indoor Patients Section was started with only seven beds (present Account Section). One Neuro Theater was activated at the ground floor (present Radiology). I closed my Dharampeth clinic and totally shifted with instruments, equipment, furniture, and staff to CIIMS.
Now Thursday 04:00 PM clinic meeting became a regular and popular event among the doctors. When the number of neurophysicians and neurosurgeons attained seven, the idea of forming a Neuro Club was born in August 1987.
We all decided to make it more official and, with Dr. G.M. Taori's consent, applied to Neurological Society of India National Office (Dr. V.K. Kak was secretary of NSI at that time). We received a prompt positive reply, and Nagpur Neuro Club got affiliated to NSI from September 1987.
Gradually, the neuro specialists — both neurosurgeons and neurophysicians — increased in number, which is now 80+. This is a very appreciable growth.

In 2004
The Nagpur Neuro Club registered with the Charity Commissioner, Nagpur, Maharashtra, and this registered body was named Nagpur Neuro Society (NNS) F-20896 (Nagpur on 30th June 2004). With regular constitution, rules, and by-laws formed, it was decided that the President and Secretary of NNS would be from neurosurgery and neurology in alternate years.
Unfortunately, we lost our legendary person and idol, Dr. Giridhar Madanlal Taori, MD, FRCP (Canada), on 15th June 2015 (he was born on 1st June 1932).
We all planned to do something in his memory under Dr. Shyam Babhulkar’s presidentship, and Dr. Nitin Chandak as Hon. Secretary. We started the 1st Annual Day of NNS and 1st Oration in the name of Late Dr. G.M. Taori. The orator was a very senior neurophysician from CMC Vellore, Prof. Mathew Alexander. Principally, the oration is planned in the month of June or an adjacent month.
-
The 2nd G.M. Taori Oration
The 2nd G.M. Taori Oration was in June 2023 and the orator was senior neurosurgeon from Mumbai, Prof. Keki Turel.
-
3rd G.M. Taori Oration
3rd G.M. Taori Oration was in June 2024 at Pench Forest, and the orator was senior neurophysician from Mumbai, Dr. Satish Khadilkar.
-
4th G.M. Taori Oration
4th G.M. Taori Oration – This year, the oration is planned at Goa with more advanced ideas and new concepts under the presidentship of Dr. Lokendra Singh & Dr. Dhruv Batra as Secretary, on 30th–31st May & 1st June 2025.
This is the 38th year of NNS, with the number growing from 7 to 80+ members and a worth of ₹1 crore deposit. We have regular returns, CA, bank accounts, and we regularly continue our clinical meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.
This is a very satisfactory, energetic, and academic society of neurosurgeons & neurologists, and affiliated neuro subjects like neuroradiology, neuropathology, neuroanaesthesia, and pediatric neurology. I wish every success and glory to Nagpur Neuro Society.
